Questions to ask a website designer
If you’ve outgrown your DIY website or feel like your current site isn’t pulling its weight, you’re not alone. Many creatives and small business owners reach a point where they need a professional partner to take their online presence to the next level. But how do you make sure you’re hiring the right web designer—someone who gets your vision, values your time, and builds a site that delivers results?
Before signing on the dotted line, asking these 7 questions will help to protect your investment and ensure your website works as hard as you do.
1. “Can I see examples of websites you’ve built for businesses like mine?”
Why it matters: You want to work with someone who understands your industry, your aesthetic, and your goals. Whether you’re an artist selling ceramics or a wellness coach building a personal brand, seeing relevant portfolio pieces helps you gauge if their style fits your vibe.
Pro tip: Look for variety and clarity in their work – sites that feel personal, intuitive, and aligned with each brand.
2. “How do you incorporate SEO into your design process?”
Why it matters: A beautiful site that no one can find is like a gallery hidden down a dark alley. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) ensures your site appears when potential clients search for what you offer.
Ask this to avoid: Designers who treat SEO as an afterthought – or worse, skip it entirely. You need someone who understands keyword research, on-page SEO, and how to make your site Google-friendly from day one.
3. “Will I be able to update my website myself?”
Why it matters: You don’t want to rely on someone else for every tiny tweak. Whether it’s updating a blog, changing prices, or adding new gallery images, you need the freedom to manage your content with ease.
What to look for: Clear handover documentation or training videos that walk you through basic updates in platforms like WordPress.
4. “What’s included in your pricing—and what’s not?”
Why it matters: No one likes nasty surprises. Understanding what’s included (SEO, mobile design, contact forms, training) and what costs extra (e-commerce setup, blog writing, hosting) gives you full control over your budget.
Ask for: A detailed quote or proposal that breaks everything down clearly – especially if you’re comparing different providers.

5. “How long will the project take from start to finish?”
Why it matters: You’re busy running your business. Knowing the timeline (and whether they stick to it!) helps you plan other marketing activities like launches, product drops, or seasonal promotions.
Look for: A clear project roadmap, including milestones for feedback, revisions, and launch.
6. “How do you handle feedback and revisions?”
Why it matters: Collaboration is key. You want a designer who values your input, provides thoughtful feedback, and isn’t precious about revisions.
Tip: Ask how many revision rounds are included, and how feedback is gathered – via email, Zoom, or using tools like Loom or Notion.
7. “Website Maintenance – What happens after the website is launched?”
Why it matters: Your website isn’t finished when it goes live – it’s just getting started. Ask whether they offer maintenance, SEO monitoring, or ongoing support.
Bonus: A designer who helps you grow beyond launch (with content updates, SEO tweaks, or strategy sessions) is a partner worth holding onto.
