I contacted Melissa to help build my new website. I wanted a site that would display my textile art in a professional manner whilst explaining the thought processes and inspiration behind it and how people can commission my work. Working with Melissa was a real pleasure. She totally understood what I was aiming for and the way I wanted my art work to be presented. Melissa has helped me in lots of unexpected ways. She has given my work a rebrand and shown me how to engage better with my audience, keeping my site simple but aesthetically interesting. The biggest win from working with Melissa is how this process of reflection on my work and what I am about has improved my confidence. I am proud of my new website and feel confident referring customers to the site knowing they will get a professional, well-presented and informative view of my work. I will definitely continue to work with Melissa because of the expertise she brings and her friendly supportive attitude. I look forward to our partnership continuing to bear fruit as my website develops in tandem with my textile art.

Melissa has helped enormously in the development of our fledgling business, by working tirelessly and expertly to rebuild our website and really make it work for us. She has a huge amount of expertise and also - luckily for us! - a huge amount of patience. She created a website that not only looks beautiful but also fulfils all the technical criteria we needed. She's very hands-on and incredibly committed. We couldn't possibly have managed any of this without her, and we're extremely grateful that she's part of our Writers Inc team. Owner's reply
Thank you both! It was such a great project to work on and I am sure your writers' retreats are going to be a huge success and dont forget I am always here to help troubleshoot any issues.

My website was in need of a revamp and the agency managing my SEO was providing me with very little help. I was recommended Melissa and after our first discussion about what I need and how she could help, I knew she was going to be great. Melissa has lots of interesting ideas and she really went above and beyond to create a website that performs to the highest of standards. The new website visually is absolutely fantastic but more importantly it is user friendly, optimised well and the SEO is already working its magic. Almost instantly I was noticing more enquiries coming through the website. If you are looking for a personalised service with someone who genuinely wants to help you and your business succeed then get in touch with Melissa. Thank you for all your help and I look forward to working with you again in the future.

I had the pleasure of having a discovery call with Melissa from Wild Currant Marketing, and I can’t recommend her enough. She was an absolute star—so helpful, generous with her time, and full of valuable information and tips about websites and SEO. Melissa is not only highly professional and experienced in marketing and SEO, but also a genuinely kind and honest person to work with. What really stood out to me was her transparency: if something wasn’t in her scope or schedule, she didn’t hesitate to refer me to someone she personally trusts. That kind of integrity is rare and speaks volumes about her character. If you’re looking for expert advice from someone who truly cares, Melissa is the one to go to!

The amount of clients coming to Night Nannies has increase by about 25-30% in past 4 months since I contacted Melissa and I totally attribute that to her wisdom. We contacted Melissa to help us with updating the look of our website and improve my Google ads reach. Melissa hugely improved our SEO and Laura did something magical with our Google ads, as now most of our clients are coming from Google and far more of them. It was the best money I ever spent and I have been recommending them to my fellow entrepreneurs.

Owner's reply
This review makes my heart sing Anastasia - for both of us! It was a delight to work with your team and please do keep in touch. Melissa

Modern workspace with books and computer for writers and creatives.

Looking dated is the symptom. The work you are not winning is the problem.

Most people who get in touch say the same thing. My website looks dated. It looks like it was built in 2018, which it was.

Then a few minutes into our call, the real issues come out:

  • You typed a question into ChatGPT hoping to see your business named in the answer. Instead, three other local firms came up.
  • Enquiries used to come in from the website and now they don’t.
  • You were asked for your web address at a networking event and you were a little embarrassed to give it.
  • A competitor with half your experience is coming up above you in Google.

Ideal for

Signs your site is costing you enquiries and bookings

  • You hesitate before giving out the address
  • Enquiries have thinned out and nothing else in the business explains why
  • You cannot change a price or add a service without emailing someone
  • It is slow, and on a phone it is worse
  • Competitors you know you outclass are ranking above you
  • Ask an AI assistant who does what you do in your area and your name does not appear
  • Customers tell you they could not find something obvious, like your prices or your service area

If you have just one of these, it is worth keeping an eye on. Get to three and the site is actively working against you.

What a redesign covers

A redesign here is not a new coat of paint on the same structure. If the structure was working you would not be reading this.

Strategy first. Before any design work, we go through what the business actually sells, who you want more of, and what the site has to do to get it. Most sites fail because nobody asked these questions at the start.

Research. Competitor analysis and keyword research, so the new pages are built around what people actually search for rather than what the industry calls itself. We stand in your customers’ shoes and work out what they are looking for and the words they use.

Structure and content. A site map that makes sense to a buyer, pages that answer the questions you get asked on the phone, and calls to action in the places people are ready to act.

Design and build in WordPress. Fast, responsive, tested across devices. Built so you can update it yourself afterwards.

Search and AI visibility. Technical SEO, on-page optimisation, structured information that AI assistants can read and quote. GA4 and Search Console connected before launch so you can see what happens next.

Training and handover. A walkthrough of how to use the site, make everyday edits and read the data. No jargon, and no disappearing act from me once it goes live.

Replacing a site without losing the rankings it already has

This is the part people worry about and it is a fair worry. A rebuild done carelessly can lose you rankings you spent years earning.

A replacement is treated differently from a new build. Existing pages get mapped, the pages that already bring in traffic are identified and protected, and every old URL is redirected to its match on the new site. That work adds to the cost and it is not optional.

No one can promise a ranking, and anyone who does is selling you something. What can be promised is that nothing already working gets thrown away.

What it costs:

Website in a WeekUp to seven pages, built in a week. Design and build, no in-depth SEO research. Best when the site needs to look right and function properly, quickly.£2,200
Website in a Week with SEOTwo-week project. Strategy, competitor and keyword research, custom design, SEO and AI visibility work. Eight pages upwards. £4,400
Small Business Website DesignFour-week project. Strategy, competitor and keyword research, custom design, SEO and AI visibility work. Five pages upwards. From £4,800, around £6,000 for ten pages

What moves the price:

  • Whether it is a new site or a replacement
  • How many pages there are and how complex they are
  • Whether you need copywriting
  • Integrations like booking systems or memberships
  • How competitive your market is for search

Payment is split across the project. 25% to book, 25% two weeks before the start date, 25% in week three, 25% before launch.

After launch, sites are covered by a care plan, from £15 a month for just hosting through to £65 a month for updates, backups, security monitoring and small content changes.

How it works

Discovery call, 15 minutes. What the business does, what the site needs to do, and whether I am the right person for it. No pitch.

Proposal. Written scope, fixed price, timescales. You sign the proposal, contract and terms.

Deposit and onboarding. 25% to book and a start date confirmed. Expect to spend four to five hours gathering copy, images and logins.

Strategy and research. A strategy call, then competitor and keyword research and the site map.

Design and build. Feedback at agreed stages, and an email every Friday telling you what moved and what I need from you the following week.

Testing, SEO and launch. Tested across devices, on-page SEO done, analytics connected, then live.

Training and handover. You are shown how to run it.

A bespoke rebuild usually runs about four weeks from the start date, assuming content arrives on time. Content is what delays projects, every time.

Who is this for?

Established businesses. You have been trading for years, the work is good, and most of it comes from people who already know you. You would rather pay once and have it built properly than patch it again.

Who it is not for?

Brand new businesses still working out what they sell.

Anyone looking for the cheapest option.

Anyone who wants a site that looks impressive but has no job to do.

Who does the work?

Me. Melissa Critchley. Twenty years in marketing, eight years building websites, over 60 sites delivered. Based in Ludlow on the Shropshire and Herefordshire border, working with clients across the UK.

You deal with me from the first call to the handover. Nothing is passed to a junior and nothing is sent offshore.

I’ve built websites for businesses in these sectors:

Retail | Luxury Accommodation | Psychotherapy | Motor Industry | Consulting | Retreats | Wedding | Building | Coaching & Education | Health & Beauty | Ecommerce | Animal & Equine | Artists | Sculptors | Ceramicists | Garden & Interior Design | Care Agencies – the list is ever expanding.

FAQs

How long does a website redesign take? A Website in a Week build takes a week once content is ready. A bespoke redesign runs about four weeks from the start date. Larger sites take longer and the proposal will say so.

Will I lose my Google rankings? Not if the replacement is handled properly. Existing pages are mapped, the ones already earning traffic are protected, and old URLs are redirected. No one can guarantee a ranking, but nothing that is working gets discarded.

How much does a small business website redesign cost in the UK? At Wildcurrant, from £2,400 for a seven-page Website in a Week, £4,400 with SEO added, and from £4,800 for a bespoke build, around £6,000 for ten pages.

Do I need to write the content? Not necessarily. I will give you a guide to writing your own copy, and most people manage it fine. If you would rather bring in a professional copywriter, I can help you find one. That does add cost and time, so it is worth deciding early.

Can I update the site myself afterwards? Yes. Every site is built to be edited by its owner and you get a walkthrough at handover. If you would rather not, the £65 a month care plan includes 15 minutes of small changes each month.

What if my problem is that AI assistants never mention us? That is a different diagnosis and there is a separate AI visibility audit for it. If a redesign is the wrong answer, I will tell you.

Do you work with businesses outside Shropshire? Yes. Clients are across the UK. The work happens over video calls and email.
